Independently Produced Stories
A Bit of the Old South — The Florida coast’s last mobile home park decides to sell to a developer. For some, it’s mere profit. For others, it’s the end of a way of life.
Try, Try Again — One man’s quest to put an old town back on the map.
Goodbye Tobacco, Hello Strawberry Jam — In 1997, North Carolina’s tobacco industry collapsed. Statewide annual income from tobacco fell from $1.3 billion to just $400 million by 2005. With the aid of their own ingenuity, as well as the Tobacco Community Reinvestment Fund, resourceful farmers such as Harold Wright have found other ways to survive.
Life Between the Canyon Walls — Paula Leonor Rivera Checa is a Cabana indian living in Colca Canyon, Peru. Her life weaves together simple subsistence and complex tradition.
This story, along with an accompanying photo slideshow, is featured on the award-winning multimedia website, White City Stories.
Island Life — Robinson Crusoe Island, 400 miles off the coast of Chile, is a place where the romantic past and the harsh realities of the present come together. Will the current colony survive, or disappear like so many before it?
This story, along with an accompanying photo slideshow, is featured on the award-winning multimedia website, Chasing Crusoe.
JFEX — The U.S. Army and Air Force recently created the JFEX – a Joint Forces EXercise – to train for the changing military landscape. At Fort Bragg in North Carolina, that means taking an airstrip from an extremist Arab militia.
Interviews produced for The Story: With Dick Gordon
I have produced and edited many interviews for The Story, a public radio program distributed nationally by American Public Media. Clips of some interviews are included below. Click on the show title to link to the entire interview.
Military Skinheads — TJ Leyden was once a skinhead in a Marine uniform. He used to recruit other Marines into the neo-Nazi movement. Now he lectures against such behavior.
After Tiananmen — A one-time student activist at Tiananmen Square, Shen Tong now does business with the Chinese government.
Art Despite Oppression II — A follow-up to an interview we did with Iraqi-born artist Wafaa Bilal. During this interview, Wafaa is sitting in a Chicago art gallery while people around the world shoot at him, using a paintball gun connected to the Internet.
Getting Through — In the aftermath of the massacre at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, we spoke with Lauren Bohn, a survivor of the Columbine shootings, about her own journey towards forgiveness. Soon after the interview, Lauren headed to Blacksburg to offer her support to surviving students.
Web projects

You Decide — editorial producer
I am the editorial producer for You Decide, a series of interactive activities designed to challenge users’ assumptions on economic policy and personal decision-making. Produced by KQED FM, You Decide is part of a collaboration on economic coverage involving public media organizations from around the country, funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Health Dialogues — social media web producer
I am currently the social media web producer for Health Dialogues, a radio program produced by KQED FM and heard on public radio stations throughout California. The program addresses health and health care issues while focusing on California’s underserved communities. As web producer, I manage the radio program’s online presence and produce online content to compliment each broadcast.
Special Olympics Live — coach and producer
